I’m not sure if it’s my computer or the podcast but each lady speaks through either the left or right bud. One thing to note, if you use headphones to listen to this podcast, make sure you have both earbuds in. Smalltalk in Japanese also releases vocabulary lists on their blog for all of their podcasts. These are great if you are going for a short walk or if you want something to listen to in the bath. I put this on the list just in case you are looking for a little bit of a challenge. Although I wouldn’t describe it as an absolute beginner resource. Each podcast usually has its own theme and they sit and talk about it in a conversational style.

But the small selection she has available are still worth a listen in my opinion. Unfortunately it looks as though Luna stopped posting podcasts after July 2021. Luna speaks clearly and somewhat slowly which is great for people around N4 level. So, even if you don’t catch what she says, you can go back and look over the script to see where you’re getting stuck. She also posts the entire transcript for each episode on her blog. One of the things that I like about Luna’s podcasts is that she has clearly labelled each podcast by JLPT level. But some of them are slightly longer at 15 minutes. Her podcasts are not only for beginners (N4) but also intermediate (N3) and advanced (N2/N1) learners too. Luna’s podcasts aren’t for absolute beginners sadly but if you’re around N4 level then this will be perfect for you. Luna is a Japanese language teacher living in Tokyo. Shun is also on iTalki as a professional language teacher. Even though I’m not using the Genki textbooks to study, the vocabulary is really simple and I like that Shun speaks clearly and slowly. Not only that but Shun uploads all of his podcasts to YouTube and will leave any extra words he uses in the description box. If he does use any extra words (usually around 10 per podcast) then he will explain those words towards the end. Shun does try to use just the vocabulary found in the Genki 1 textbook but sometimes it’s not always possible. His current podcasts focus’ on the Genki textbook series.

Each podcast is around 7 to 10 minutes long. He has 2 podcasts available: Japanese with Shun and Oyasumi Japanese with Shun. Shun is a Japanese language teacher living in New Zealand. Or, since this post is about improving listening skills, maybe that’s a good thing? So if you didn’t catch something he said, you’ll have to listen to it a few times to try and make it out.

The downside is, Teppei doesn’t release any transcripts for his podcasts. Perfect if you want something short and sweet to listen to while you make a quick cup of tea or if you just want something to listen to before bed. But once you’ve listen to one or two podcasts you soon get used to it.Įach podcast is around 5 minutes long. His speech pattern is a little difficult to follow as he sometimes speaks faster and others time much slower. Well in theory it should be easy to follow along. Teppei uses simple beginner vocabulary and grammar so it is easy to follow along. This podcast is hosted by a Japanese man called Teppei. Photo by Anna Tarazevich on Nihongo con Teppei
